Kidney donors live as long – Wed, 10 Mar 2010 PST
LOS ANGELES – People who donate a kidney to a sick friend or relative live at least as long as others in the general population and may, in fact, live somewhat longer because they tend to take better care of themselves after the procedure, researchers reported Tuesday. “We have intuitively … felt this way, and hoped that this operation is safe, but this is the first time that we have been able to demonstrate it in a national representation of live donors,” said Dr. Dorry L. Sagev of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, lead author of the report appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Spokane City Council members are poised to reject Spokane County’s offer to buy the vacant Riverfront Park YMCA, a decision that could force the city to sell parkland or raise taxes to help offset the cost of the building. Officials also say that they likely will decline proposals they received to redevelop the site for private use because they pose too much financial risk to the city.

State workers' cost to climb – Wed, 10 Mar 2010 PST
The current proposal for altering the percentage state employees pay for health care would change the ratio from the state paying 88 percent and employees paying 12 percent to the state paying 70 percent and employees paying 30 percent. This triples the amount paid through a state employee’s paycheck. Additionally, there would be a $3,000 deductible per person, with a $7,500 maximum per family.

Washington has been a leader in investing in and protecting the health of its citizens. The Basic Health plan provides affordable health care to low-income people in our state. The Breast and Cervical Health Program has provided screening for early detection of cancer. Since its inception, the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program has helped cut smoking rates by 30 percent.
